MRP Project Updates You Need to Know

It’s been awhile since I posted. The last few months have been more hectic than any others in recent memory. It’s been one thing right after another. So, when I didn’t get enough interest to run the fall session of Raising Resilient Kids, I was a bit relieved. Don’t get me wrong. I’ve loved both sessions that we’ve held: the group camaraderie, sympathetic support, and everything I’ve learned from each participant. So, it worked out well when I had so …

Let a Family Member or Friend Know You’re Thinking about Them

It’s been a little over a month since my last post. It’s been a crazy summer filled with lots of travel for baseball. And we’ve loved every minute of it. Now, we have about month of down time before school and fall sports swing into full gear. We hope to enjoy some summer activities with family and friends. But even during our busy last couple of months, the nominations for bags for a boost have continued to come in. While …

Take Time to Honor a Loved One Who Has Passed

I haven’t posted in a while. May/June is always tough. But with this year being the five-year milestone of Mike’s death, it was especially hard. I always need to prepare for this time of year. It’s like when you brace yourself for a fall. You know it’s going to happen. You just don’t know how bad it will hurt. And for me, as time passes, it doesn’t get easier. I take time to truly reflect on all that Mike’s missed …

Thank You Norwood PTO!

Last holiday season, I put out a call for an organization to partner with The MRP Project to collect items for our bags for a boost. The Norwood, MA (Mike’s home town) PTO answered the call. I got a large delivery of items on Mother’s Day! It made my day. I appreciate the support so much. Two bags will go out this week! Our third session of Raising Resilient Kids will meet tonight. I’ve gotten great feedback from our participants. …

Are You Trying to Fix Your Children’s Problems or Teaching Them to Cope?

Why is it more important than ever for kids to be resilient? Research shows: 1 in 7 school-aged children experience mental health problems i.e. anxiety and/or depression 65% of adolescents will not actively seek help for mental health issues Academics, sports, and social pressures are more demanding than ever before. For example, social media has changed the way children communicate. This can negatively impact children’s confidence and perceptions of themselves. As parents our job is not to fix problems. Rather, we …

It’s the Little Things that Get Me Every Time

This quote really resonated with me. It describes me and my grief so well. I can “handle” the hard days and the big milestones. Why? Because I can prepare for them. It’s the little things that hit me out of the blue. That’s when I lose it.   Like the first time Nick put on his football helmet and walked around the corner to show me. It was this year; his first year of tackle football. He’s been wanting to …

Resist the Urge to Fix Problems

When your child has a problem, as parents our gut response is to try and fix it. Instead, I offer this suggestion. Rather than providing solutions or advice, ask questions. Bounce the problem back to your child by asking leading questions. In this way, your child has the opportunity to think through the issue and can come up with good solutions on their own.      Helping kids work out issues on their own is a key to resilience. Want …

Another Great Piece of Parenting Advice

In my last post, I talked about how as parents we should lend one hand, not two. I received a lot of great feedback about this post. So, when I saw this other piece of advice on Facebook recently, I decided to share it with you. A former teacher and coach from my high school recently posted this great information. Along with the picture he said it was how his mom raised him (see below). I didn’t know until after …

Parents, Lend One Hand Not Two

Raising resilient kids isn’t easy to do. In fact, I used to think I was helping my kids when I lent two hands. But as the years have gone by, I’ve learned the opposite is true. Read below to find out why.  Lend One Hand Not Two (an excerpt from the book “Making Grateful Kids” It’s all too easy for parents to get sucked into doing too much for their children. You may have heard the term helicopter parents before. …
