This past fall, The MRP Project offered a pilot educational series for parents. The series, Raising Resilient Kids, took place one night a week for five weeks outdoors in a socially distanced setting.
What started out as a group of acquaintances quickly turned to a cohesive group of moms who strived to work with the facilitators and one another to ensure their child(ren) could positively and productively overcome adversity.
Why Is Resilience Important?
Research shows 1 in 7 school-aged kids experience mental health problems. And sixty-five percent of adolescents will not actively seek help for mental illness.
Academics, sports, and social pressures are more demanding than ever before. Kids face adversity every day. They need to be able to pick themselves up and keep going! That’s where Raising Resilient Kids can help.
About Raising Resilient Kids
In this social support program, we highlight the essential role obstacles play in children’s development. The facilitators discourage parents from removing obstacles and trying to fix problems. Instead, we discuss specific behaviors, thoughts, and actions to help children cope with their feelings in specific situations. These strategies can then be used to help deal with similar situations in the future.
Additionally, we spend some time during the beginning sessions to think about ourselves and our own resilience. This is a key aspect to the series because it’s critical for us as parents to be resilient. We can’t expect our children to be resilient unless we’re modeling appropriate behavior for them!
What’s Next?
The participants from our pilot course have decided to stay in touch and keep the momentum going through monthly email correspondence focused on specific topics. When hardships arise, these women will band together and will be a force to be reckoned with using what they’ve learned from class and one another.
Since the pilot was so successful. Registration is now open for our spring session tentatively beginning at the end of April. Email themrp8project@gmail.com to reserve your spot today!

Raising Resilient Kids was a wonderful series that I am so happy I had the opportunity to participate in. Through this series, I gained new strategies to work with my own children through situations that, in the past, have felt overwhelming to me.
I walked away from this series with new language to use to work with my children and to help guide them through situations they may encounter in everyday life gropwing up. I am truly grateful for the discussions, encouragement, and guidance this series provided.
This is a series that every parent should participate in. – Michelle M.
